Head Table:  Our President Paul Roulston, invites Kevin Silver, Diane Sewell, Brent Shackleton, Ron Shaw, Gord Sherwin, Pat Shewen and Paul Siberry, to join him at the head table.

Today at Rotary – Our guest was Chris Jones the Manager of the SPCA Centre here in Stratford.  She provided an update on the new facility that the SPCA is now delighted to have – Gloria’s Place.  This new facility dedicated to animal welfare is a renovated manufacturing building on Griffiths Road in Stratford and is the culmination of a $1 M capital campaign and the dedication of volunteers and animal lovers across the region.  It opened in September 2016 and the new centre is well-suited to address the SPCA’s mandate and the ever-increasing demand for its services.

Program speaker Christine Jones speaking on Perth Huron Humane Society. Introduced by Pat Shewen.

Ms Jones restated the fundamental principles of the SPCA – the “5 Freedoms” – which inform their work and commitment.  These are Freedom from Hunger and Thirst, Freedom from Discomfort, Freedom from Pain, Injury and Disease, Freedom from Distress, and Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour.   These freedoms underlie a responsibility for the organization to be accountable, innovative, educate and provide humane treatment.

In 2017, the Centre recorded some impressive achievements – 635 animals rescued, 442, adoptions, 608 spays/neuters, and 4370 students and young people learned about animal health and care through educational sessions.  All this on a budget of $900,000 and only 1 f/t staff, a few p/t and lots of enthusiastic volunteers.

Programmes conducted by the Centre include educational sessions, medical clinics, adoption services, microchip implanting, animal control and enforcement of regulations in conjunction with municipal enforcement and licensing.

Ms Jones reiterated that the Stratford Centre needs community support to keep up its services and mentioned several events that help with this – The Best in Show Gala on November 21, The 3rd Annual Vic Hayter Race Day (named in honour of a long-time supporter of the SPCA), and the summer camps.  They also seek sponsorships, have municipal contracts for inspection and enforcement, levy fees and gratefully accept donations from people who value the organization’s important role in our community.
